He is Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Legal Medicine at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Director of the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Program at Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA), Professor in the Graduate Program in Psychiatry at the University of São Paulo (USP), and a Guest Professor and member of the Medical School Council of the UNIMAX.

He completed his Master’s and PhD degrees at UFRGS and obtained his Habilitation (Livre-Docência) at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp). He is Editor Emeritus of the Brazilian Journal of Psychiatry and has served as co-editor of European Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, International Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Attention Disorders.

He was President of the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP) and a member of the DSM-5 Work Group on Disruptive Behavior Disorders and ADHD of the American Psychiatric Association. He also served as President of the World Federation of ADHD.

He is the first researcher working in Latin America to receive the prestigious Ruane Child Psychiatry Award, granted by the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF).

At CISM, he serves as Vice-Coordinator.
